So very recently I watched the Exorcism of Emily Rose. I was generally impressed by this flick and it has stuck with me for a few weeks now.
I'm not the type of person who seeks out what are called, "Horror movie". I like good films, and if they have a bit of a horror aspect, so be it. Such examples of this are The Cell, Frailty (Mike, too bad your not here right now as I am in the mood to watch it.) Shallow Grave,...etc. Most of those films are notably strange and are fantastic pieces of art.
When I had heard of Emily Rose I assumed it was just your basic religious thriller, and I've seen some bad ones, Lost Souls springs to mind. I had no interest in it, and I especially don't care much for Laura Linny. I can't put my finger on it, but she just bugs me. So I really had no interest in seeing this film until I had a customer come in who is a big movie buff (and a horror freak) tell me how good it was. And he was telling me things that made this film unique and interesting.
First, it is a courtroom setting. A priest is on trial for the death of Emily Rose and the whole story is told in flashback and comes out as the story progresses.
And what is particularly fascinating is how well presented both sides of the case are presented.
The prosecution is very believable. One would think that the agenda with such a film would be to make the defense strong so you believe that Emily was processed by demons, but that's not what they do in this film. Both lawyers are equally strong and present very good cases and it really works your mind over as you try and decide which one you believe.
Another interesting element of this film is that it reminded me greatly of the Edward Norton, Richard Gere, heh, Laura Linny, film Primal Fear. In such film Ed Norton is on trial for the alleged violent murder of a Cardinal. Richard Gere is his hot shot attorney and Laura Linny is the Prosecutor. so in Emily rose seeing her play the defense is rather interesting.
And I certainly can't write a review on Emily Rose without referencing the amazing performance of Jennifer Carpenter, the young girl who plays her. Her performances is intense and riveting. When the flashback sequences started I was really skeptical of the acting ability of this young girl, all the running and screaming made my ass tired. But. As the film progresses you realize just what a fucking awesome actress she is! The things she does with her body and her voice are terrifying. The scenes showing the exorcism are some of the post powerful I have every watched, they are burned into my mind, the sounds, the visuals, and the visuals are pretty much untouched by special affect. When the special affects artists saw her performance that knew that there was nothing they could do to enhance the performance, only hinder it, so what you is accurate to the performance she gave. ..yes there are special affects, but they are used in other aspects of the film. Her performance is Spellbinding.
