I know every time I swing by this place I promise to write more, but I honestly think it is going to be true this time. I have a lot of good things going on in my life right now so I actually they will be better, more fun entries. I used to love to right really fun silly post.
I've gotten a promotion and at this time it seems to be a lot less stress. I'm not as agitated or tired when I come home. AND I don't have to work weekends anymore! Yea! It's been awhile since I've be able to say that.
I think I'm going to start this new diary surge with one of my favorite types of posts, a film review.
I was just taking a peek about the web because I always try to post an interesting picture from the film. This isn't one you might see in most publications or media surrounding the film, I like to pick one that I personally respond to and think really represents the film. ....Now I will say that I didn't really find one this time that really did all the things I usually like the picture I post to do, but that's not what I'm getting to. The point is that before the other night when Becky and I were wandering around Blockbuster (Something we very really do as we've had a netflix account since the very beginning.) I had never heard of it. Never. Knew absolutely nothing about it. I saw that it was directed by Ben Affleck. I wasn't quite sure what I thought of that; the idea of so many actors having to jump behind the camera and call the shots seems a bit much. And also, he cast his brother in the lead roll, which again I'm not especially excited about. But, I did see that it had Ed Harris, who I seriously love! (Especially since his portrayal of Jackson Pollock...and also his roll in The Hours.) And Morgan Freeman.
But it seemed the more I dug around just now, the more I saw all the raves going on about it. ...so I feel a little silly adding to the mix.
But I have to say that I was so incredibly impressed by this film. I this been quite sometime since I've been this excited about a film.
I was impressed by the incredible realism. I love how the cast the real people. They had really ugly people who looked like they were really strung out. And I liked that for a change, instead of hiring some perfect looking person, having them starve themselves and give them ratty greasy hair and give them make up that made it look like they had bags under their eyes. At first it was a bit disturbing, but more and more I got to like the idea.
As in all my reviews, I'm really going to write a play by play, exact detail account of the film, you can go to any web site and find that.
I thought the film was very well paced, I thought all the actors were very good and very well cast. They all did some really amazing work.
And honestly I was very impressed with Ben's directing ability and style. ...Really specifically that. He had a style. He had a really interesting point a view when it came to telling the story. That is actually pretty rare. I've seen a lot of movies lately (note: I wrote 'movies' and not 'films.) that they are so basic, run of the mill put the camera here and shoot the scene. Now in some instances this is perfectly fine. You don't need to go show boating camera work,....but in this film it worked really well! It made for more suspense, as well as a much more personal and intimate story telling. For someone to do that on their first time out, really I was seriously impressed, and I'm not impressed that often.
I love how the topics of the film make you think. It ends with learning several dramatic decisions that the characters made. These are not easy decisions and they all of consequences. I love how the film ends with you wondering what it is you would do, or how you would react, or act, in that situation. I recommend watching this with a group of people as it leads to a rather dramatic conversation afterward.
It's funny, when the film ended I wasn't sure if it was something I'd be able to watch again, but the following night I was almost forcing it on my friends, making them watch it, excited to see their reactions and learn their takes on the subject matter.
I have to stay that it deals with some heavy issues, and does have some violence and rough language. I'm perfectly okay with that. My whole reasoning for bring that up is that it seems to be a film enjoyed by both sexes. ...if I'm going to be lame a reference gender film stereotyping. ...But it emotional and character interaction, and it tells of love on many planes, but it is also tough and vulgar and violent... very much something that 'guys' would like. It really is a film that you can with a collection of genders without having to go the way of the romantic comedy. It kinda goes the other way, its a dark, violent, disturbing film that 'girls' can be drawn into and be just as passionate and focused on the story.
I think it is an amazing film achievement and I think it is a wonderful piece of art.
In one of the production shorts a man a comment saying how "good art doesn't answer questions, it creates them". And I completely agree with that sentiment and I think it applies perfectly to this film.
