Harry Potter eat your heart out!!
I'm so excited that I had to write an entry about this immediately!!
when I was little I was an avid watcher of the Disney channel and every Halloween they would show the movie The Worst Witch. ...And I loved it! It's sort of an ugly duckling type of tale, ...the outcast who can't seem to do anything right turns out to be completely awesome and saves the day.
Not to complicated,...But So Fun.
I think a reviewer on Amazon put it best with:
Imagine if "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" was made in the mid-eighties, for television, with almost no budget. Also, imagine the hero is a misfit young witch rather than a wizard prodigy, attending an all-girl school for witchcraft. Replace Maggie Smith with Diana Rigg (Actually I think the example works better with replacing Alan Rickman, as Rigg is the Potions Mistress who wears all blak and hates our lovable lead.), Richard Harris with Mrs. Garrett from "Facts of Life," and Lord Voldemort with... Mrs. Garrett from "Facts of Life," and you have the 1986 classic television Halloween special, "The Worst Witch."
With Halloween rolling around I just had to get my hands on it. I hadn't realized that Fairuza Bulk was in it, but when I watched Return to Oz and checked the dvd listing of all her movies and saw that it was her, I thought it was so interesting that she was in my 2 favorite movies growing up. I think I might have to do a review of Return to Oz if I have not.
Oh, and how could I forget, Dr. Frank-N-Futer himself, Tim Curry as the Dead Sexy (in a weird Bowie meets Robert Palmer kind of way.) Grand Wizard that all the girls are madly in love with. He even has a song with a weird Peter Gabrial Sledgehammer-video vibe. mmmm but really, damn those lips and that stare and the growl that you want to hear whispered in your ear in bed.

So time has passed and Yes I watched the movie with my peeps. it was, admittedly, a lot more chessy than I remember. ...I forgot all the cheesy songs and yes, living in a post LotR world....the effects were quite horrible, but that moment of joy at the end when the underdog becomes the hero had me totally giddy and cheering! And yes I am wandering around singing all the cheesy songs. ("So if you're Filthy, ...Smelly ....Evil, Wicked, and Cruel...") Much yea for the Worst Witch!
