So I watched What About Bob? today. It had been awhile. ...I love that movie. one of the first VHS's I bought for myself.

Oh...and considering how old this movie is...if you haven't seen it....go see it ...but I have no remorse for spoiling the plot if you read on.

I've always considered it to be a dark comedy. ...but actually this is a Classic Tragedy.

Dictionary.com defines Tragedy as:

A drama or literary work in which the main character is brought to ruin or suffers extreme sorrow, especially as a consequence of a tragic flaw, moral weakness, or inability to cope with unfavorable circumstances.

Contrary to how it would seem...with the title of the movie being "What about Bob?" The main character is really Dr. Leo Marvin, not Bob. He is the first character we meet.

Dr. Marvin's tragic flaw is the ever favorite, Hubris (Overbearing pride or presumption; arrogance) He tells Bob in his initial consulation that he can help him. That he, and his book can save even this exstreme mult-phobic personality with accute seperation anxiety who has a desprate need to have family ties.

Really it's not that Bob ruins his life (and keeping with the Greek traditionally telling...maybe the Gods were angry with Leo for his Hubris and brought Bob into his life to serve as the tool of their will to Punish Leo) but rather Leo's hubris regarding Bob.

His family always believe's that Bob is right. Leo can't have a patient be right....He is the one in the right.

His family believes that Bob is eccentric...and maybe alittle nurotic but really nothing serious. This is questioning the good dotor's diagnosis.

When he decided to commit Bob to the insitution none of the other dotors agreed with his diagnosis.

Leo's house is distoryed because of his attempt to kill Bob because he ruined the Most importent day in his career.

Finally, driven insane by pride and jealousy he loses everything and ends up blaming Bob for stealing his greatest idea.

Instead of being angry he could have praised Bob for his improvement and used the situation to his benefit. But it's a Tragedy right? sometimes a happy ending is impossible.
