So I’m currently listening to Tom Petty’s Wildflowers album. And that got me thinking about the song “Last dance with Maryjane” and how it seems to have become one of the if not the most loved Tom Petty song ever. And I was recalling that it was originally released as a single off of the greatest hits cd. I think it might have been with the release of that album and the success of it and the song that since so many musicians have been releasing greatest hits albums and including at least one new song. …and it most cases that new song is rather sub par and generally a gigantic disappointment on the album.

So I’m curious to know how did they know “Maryjane” would be so good and so beloved. Did they know some how that it was an absolute classic? I mean, was it Tom’s favorite song ever so he knew it had to be good? This is such a rare occurrence…..to beat the odds like that…or rather to set the bar so high that no one else can live up to it. That’s impressive.
