Secret WindowJuly 17, 2004 7:42 p.m. Related Reading So I finally got around to watching Secret Window. I'm a little glad I didn't go and see it in theater like I wanted. Becky saw it with her brother and sister and she told me how predictable it was and what not. She said I'd figure it out really quickly and I should just wait till video, so I did. And all the above is true. It is predictable, but Johnny Depp is fantastic. I really enjoyed his performance. His hair is just so great, so funny, his robe he's always in, and the dialogue is really great. If his little comments aren't ad libs then I'm rather impressed by the screenplay. And actually, I get the impression that the screenplay was pretty good. All the actors were saying that they didn't see the ending coming, they were shocked by it. And clearly anyone one who has seen the ending saw it coming the whole movie. I watched some extras and I was getting very irritated by the writer/director. He kept saying all these things that he wanted to do...and how various things are indicated of something else and I was just like, "Um....no that doesn't come across". This movie also gave me a greater respect for David Fincher, as if I didn't have a lot already, but...my guess...and I could be wrong, is that the writer/director pitched the story to Fincher and Fincher turned him down. And knowing that this guy wrote the screenplay for Panic Room and knowing what Fincher did with that....and seeing what the writer did with one of his pieces on his own....and Panic Room is really well done, and this clearly is not. The writer/directer made a comment on how he wanted a gradual reveal...he didn't want and "light bulb" moment where the ultimate secret is revealed because we've seen that a lot....but dude....the reason there is so many movies with "light bulb" secret reveals is because the WORK! ....this guy made it so "Gradual" that it was so predictable that it made it rather annoying to watch. but since I went in with rather low expectations...just to see the Johnny, I wasn't disappointed and it was worth the watch. |
