Real shock and awe........MARS!August 28, 2003 2:40 a.m. Related Reading Happy Mars Night everyone! I've been waiting for this day for sometime. ...If I'm correct Mars has been visible for awhile now..but tonight is just the record setter. I've been saying 'hi' to Mars ever since I knew I could look up and see it. I have been really looking foreward to tonight. Around 10pm I called up my friend Mike and asked him if he'd like to drive out to the middle of nowhere and look at Mars. ...His reaction was "Oh right mars is tonight, huh maybe I'll have to peak out my window with binoculars". All he was doing was chillin' in his place talking to people online. ...he just didn't seem to understand the signficance. Becky however did. ..So after she got off work at 11:30, we grabbed some consumables of various types as well as gas....and drove 20 minutes out of town into the middle of nowhere. We pulled off the interstate over onto a gravel road that was surrounded by corn fields. When we got out of the car we knew immedately that the sight was well worth the trip. Far away from the city lights we looked up and saw and ocean of stars! We saw the glowing system of the Milky Way! Uncountable constellations. ....and then off in the distance in all it's glory was Mars. (not exactly what I saw, but gets the point across) It was so beautiful. She and I were just mesmorized by the sight of it. ...Right there! MARS! I'm still in shock and awe of it. Becky was saying that we needed to do that type of thing more often, only next time bring blankets and pillows.....and just lay out underneath the stars. I really wished I knew my constellations better. ....And what's really interesting is the fact that I've been reading the works of Graham Hancock which have a great deal to do with astronomy and it's relationship with sites here on Earth. ...I dunno it just seemed to corralate and thus make my bonding experence with Mars all the more personally significant. I called Libby from there to wish her happy Mars night and alas she had been unable to experience it. I felt bad for her because was the one who told me of this occurance, she was the one that was originally so excited and really really wanted to experience Mars. Mars.....MARS! |
