So yesterday I watched Lost in Translation. I was horribly disappointed. I had to force myself to finish it. And I don't just not finish a movie. (Hell B and I watched all of The Shipping News!) If I had watched it in a theater it would have been hard not to have walked out. but I think I would have finished it out and then complained to get my money back. B felt that way about Full Frontal. but ...atleast THAT had something worth laughing about. This was just Bill Murrey looking Miserable for and hour and 40 minutes.

Now granted, it's not that horrible. It would have made a nice short film. ...maybe 30-45 minutes long. really, there were some really great moments! there were a few funny moments. there were a few parts that the emotional connection between the two of them was quite beauiful. and the Cinematography was Amazing. The Look of the film was spectactuar. ....BUT there was just so much useless, pointless CRAP that just didn't need to be there. Classic sense of a filmaker falling in love with their subject matter (the stange humor of Japan) that they don't really understand how to cut out all that unnessicary bullshit and focus on the story. They really could have said everything needed to be said and really made their point better by cutting out all that and just making a short film.

Tonight I was in the mood to watch American History X. I don't think I had watched it since I bought my copy last summer. ...It's just one of those films you have to be in the mood to watch. so ...when I had the glimmer of a notion that I wanted to watch it, asked Becky if she wanted to watch it and popped a bottle of Red Wine in the freezer. (yes I drink my red wine chilled! It tastes better that way goddamnit!). and maybe about half way into the film I couldn't get out of my head that it is perfect that I was watching AHX right after LIT. AMX is such a Brillent film. I mean this is the standard by which we should judge all film. It is painful in all the right ways. it is simple in all the right ways. It is emotional and intellectual in All the Right Ways. I'm of the opinion that LIT tried to be all of those things, but frankly it missed one major detail. I didn't care about the characters. ...Well maybe Bill Murrey, but definately not the chick. I mean, yeah, they are miserable. So is everyone else in the world. So she's lost. So the fuck is everyone else in the world! Why are you so special that I should waste and hour and a half of my life hearing about how much yours sucks? ....All on a platform that it's artsy, and deep, and meaningful and satirical. Bullshit. It just tried too hard. And at the best efforts of everyone involved I think it falls flat. And this is such a disappointment because The Virgin Suicides is a brillent film.
