Jerico is myth.January 27, 2003 11:40 a.m. Related Reading I just got in a pretty intense debate in my Logic class. The prof made some comment about Jerico being a myth....which sent alot of people up in arms. ...and by using folklore (God Bless Dr. Kelley) I did (or so I think) a better job of defending the prof's position than he did. I was saying that whether or not Jerico is true ....or whether or not it actually happened...the story of it went into oral tradition and therefore made it a myth...and that someone sometime wrote it down. And idea of our taking it as fact would be just like taking the story of the stolen kidney, or Tanning bed deaths, or the roommate's death...or the dog in the microwave (take your pick).....and taking it as fact. There are even to this day hear things like this and are convince they are true. The one that specificly comes to mind is the story of the girl insterting a hot dog into her vigina and getting it stuck. It seems lately that EVERYONE swears up and down that there was a girl at their school that had this happen. I've had countless conversations with people telling them over and over that it is an urban legend....but they will hear none of it. My point being that it is almost inconceivable ("you keep using that word....I do not think it means what you think it means") to believe that we are the only culture that has these urban myths. And around this time the prof brought up Homer and how the Oddessy is just a collection of myths as well. This one guy was getting upset with the idea of trying to use science to explain Christianity....he said this right as he was leaving....and I was like ...Um...no it's not. I don't see how the two are realated. It has nothing to do with Christianity...it's acknowleging that the Old Testiment is mainly parables and myths. Stories that went into oral tradition and were written down. Anyway....that's my rant for the moment. I know that if I continue now the entry will never end. I'm off for lunch and class. |
