My mom and I went and saw The Gangs of New York. That's right I fell for all the hype, ..the Television trailers and the giant unread article in Rolling Stone.

Want to know my opinion? This movie kicks serious ass. Part of the reason I went is because I am a pre Titanic Leonardo DiCaprio fan. ...What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Basketball Diaries (one of the most unknown underrated films)....and post Titanic..The Beach.

Yet,...I think that the absolute shining momemt of acting in this film is Daniel Day-Lewis as William Cutting AKA Bill The Butcher. He created an absolutely EPIC Villian,..the likes hasn't been seen in along time. I can liken him to Begbie from Trainspotting (who I think is an amazing villian,..one you just love to hate). What makes this one specficly great is how multi-dementional the a makes the character. At one point in the film you want to hate him with all your being,..but something makes you love the man,...some sort of good in him. ...It's just amazing.

Plus...the world which they created for this film is perfect. You entirely believe you are there in every detail. I haven't seen a film do that this good in a long time ...with the exception of Reign of Fire.

I think this is absolutely a must see (be warned there is a great deal of Graphic violence...which should be expected since it IS Scorsese. and therefore not recommended for children..) And I have a strong feeling that this film could lose something moving to the small screen. Epic Film Classics as I'm am calling this one, need to be seen on the Big Screen. Don't miss the opprotunity.
