I was just thinking about the time I watched The Princess and the Warrior with these actor friends of mine.

They said there were noticable differences between German and American Actors. ...so much that it was if they were doing things backwards.

American actors ...according to my friends....feel something and this causes them to respond. For example, in Amercian Beauty when Thora Birch is taking off her shirt for the guy....she's dealing with this emotion vulnerability and because he finds her so beautiful, she is showing him the part of herself that she most despises.

However....according to my friends....the German actors in The Princess and the Warrior are acting in reverse. They think of the act they are doing and know that the emotion will come from the act. For example there is a moment in said film where the man attacks a TV with a chair...the does this to show grief, but....it's the act...as he attacks the tv, the emotion comes from the process....not the other way around.

Now, what I was thinking about was the scene in the Two Towers when Aragorn believes that Merry and Pippen are dead and thus kicks the Uruk helmet. Peter Jackson wanted him to do this over and over because his aim got better everytime he kicked it. The last take, the one in the film, Viggo kicked and broke two toes. So in the film you see him scream, kick the helmet, scream even more and fall to his kness. He used the pain from the injury to fuel his performance.

So here's my question. The one I got out of bed to write about so it would leave my head....

Did the emotion create the action, or did the action create the emotion? Or is in maybe alittle of both?

I guess it's both...but I didn't expect I'd gain clarity by writing, merely just to ask.
