So I watched Basic Instinct last night.

I borrowed it from a friend of mine because I hadn't seen it before.

Wow there is so much that I can write about it.

The movie had been hyped so much that it wasn't as good as I expected it to be. ...but I can understand how it was groundbreaking for when it was made. but honestly I expected the plot to be better. It was almost like they didn't know what they had on their hands. they have thes great characters and this interesting plot...and all these puzzles pieces, but they didn't quite know what to do with them all, and left the puzzle unfinished.

Okay....if you haven't seen the movie and don't want it spoiled, don't read on...

but ya know, I'm not convinced that Katherine was the killer. ....which is what I believe the director and other people working on the film believed and tried to show.

Realisticly there are so many lose ends that showing a close up on an ice pick at the end does not do anything to wrap anything up.

And I have to say that the idea of trying to play up 'katherine' as the wrong woman that Nick falls for was a misinterpretation of the text. ...yeah I think that's what I'm trying to say. The whole film is a misinterpretation of the screenplay. It became evident to me very early on that the 'wrong woman' that Nick was going to fall for, was the dr. lady. She was obviously the prepetrater in most to the killings refered to in the movie. (note: I'm calling this a movie not a film. ..well...I guess it is a film it was good for when it came out) They had this great villain that they down played and brushed aside under the misinterepation of Katherine and the killer. I felt robbed of a climatic moment because there really wasn't one. I mean...the finding of all the evidence for the Dr's crimes was done in such a Scooby Doo manner that it was just not believable...and then the whole 'tense' moment at the end where you think she's gonna stab him....out of place and not in her character. Someone is not going to cry about not wanting to lose someone...and then kill them for no apparent reason....without having a preconceived defense strategy. Atleast that's what her charactor would do. I never really felt Nick to be in danger from Katherine

Plus they seemed to just forget about the large sum of money in the IA cop's bank account. There are so many possible reasons that could have been there. Sure Katherine could have bought Nick's file. ...I was under the impression that the Dr. Lady paid him off because he found out about certain things in her past....he back mailed her...Which would give her a motive for killing him...and the fact that Nick just pissed her off....so she could frame him. ...which she did...and then chickened of at the last minute...but that also put him in a position where he owed her for something. ...beause if I remember right, when they have that argument right before the guy turned up dead.....Nick says to the dr. lady that they fuck 10-15 times, it wasn't memorable and that he owned her nothing. ...Well if she kills the guy that's harassing both him and her....and gets Nick off the hook for it....I think that would mean he owes her just alittle something.

The surpise conclusion I was expecting was for Katherine and The dr. lady to be working together to try and bring down Nick. (but the dr. lady trying to bring down Nick and and Katherine. Kill 2 birds with 1 icepick. But Katherine and the dr. lady working together would have been a nice little twist. Any twist is better than the films entire lack of twist.

I also felt that alot of the dialogue was needlessly crude. Their attempt to make a stylish yet sexually charged Film Noir fell short when having Michael Douglas comment on how you could tell his sex life was bad because he was developing calluses on his hand. There were so many unnecessary story lines which kept them from bringing any of them to a well deserved conclusion or climax. Katherine's girlfriend served no purpose only except to make her sexually adventurous...like oooo look she's bi! big deal. It was an unnessicary plot line. We didn't care for this character, so her death brought only indifference. ....It only served to open up and break Katherine...And I was surprised to see her upset because Roxie's character was so one dementional and and pointless. And the whole allusion to Nick's past, if that was so signficant, why didn't we get to learn any of the details?

It seems to me that they wanted to get the movie finished in the alotted amount of length and included X amount of sex, and Y amount of violence. Everything inbetween got cut and sacrificed and no real points were ever brought to fruition.

But, that's just my humble opinion from one watching.
